1985-1986 Yearbook

- • .. Basketball - ~ ~ Tough times ~ eneath every dark cloud there is a silver lining," and even though the Harding Lady Bisons did not have a successful season in terms of wins and ... 1/!!) losses, there were many accomplishments which made 1985-86 a positive campaign. Competing on an intercollegiate level for only the third year, many did not expect Harding to be competing for national honors, but throughout the past season the Lady Bisons had been nationally ranked in team free throw percentage and finished in the top ten nationally in that category. Team records were not the only ones to fall during the season. Kim Wilkins, a senior from Flippin, literally rewrote the record book that she wrote last year. She finished in the top three in scoring average in the tough Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference. She also was among the leaders in free throw percentage and rebounding. She reset a single season scoring record that she had established last season. In only two years, Wilkins also established new AIC scoring marks for her career in conference games as well as all games. The previous record holder, Terri Conder from UCA, was a two-time All-American. Phil Watkins, head basketball coach, along with the rest of the teamr entered this season with a great deal of optimism. 'We knew that we would be more competitive than we had been before," he said. However, the optimism did not turn itself into victories. The Lady Bisons recorded only two victories, with one of those coming by way of a forfeit. 'We were just never able to get over the hump," Watkins said. "If we had been able to put together a victory or two, we would have gained some confidence in ourselves." Besides Wilkins, there were other bright spots on this season's squad. Andrea Bledsoe, a transfer from Garland County Community College, was the second leading scorer on this year's team by being one of the AIC's leaders in field goal percentage.11t Basketball 1985 AIC Standings Arkansas Tech ........ .. ....... . 17-1 Central Arkansas . . . ..... .. .. . .. . 13-5 UA-Monticello. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12-6 Arkansas College . ..... . ... . ..... 11-7 Ouachita Baptist . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11-7 UA-Pine Bluff .. ... ..... ... . ..... 8-10 College of the Ozarks . . . . . . . . . . . . 8-10 Henderson State ............ .... . 6-12 Southern Arkansas ........... . . . 3-15 Harding University .............. 1-17 Strategy maneuvers.
