... Cross Country Cross Country Carries Tradition ·· F)or the fifteenth year in a row, the Bisons cross country team won ~the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championship. Led by seniors AI Bates and Larry Wayne, the team continued a ~ tradition of winning that has brought a lot of recognition to the Harding cross country program. The team opened their season with a sweeping victory in the Bison Booster Invitational, their only home meet. Other highlights included first place finishes at the Arkansas Tech Invitational and the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis. The Bisons will be losing two of their top runners. Both Bates and Wayne completed four years of running for Harding. Bates stood as an outstanding runner, leading the Bisons in most of their races. Wayne usually seemed to be close behind. Referring to Bates, Wayne said, "He's got a little more speed. I'm more of a longer distance runner. He's definitely got the edge." Coach Ted Lloyd finished his seventeenth season coaching Harding cross country. Winning the conference was definitely the highlight of his season, he said. The team placed fourteenth at nationals. Lloyd attributed Harding's success to the strong tradition. "Good runners want to come to Harding," he said. "They receive adequate training and have a lot of confidence in themselves." ''The biggest thing Coach Lloyd teaches us," said Wayne, "is that if you want to run, you've got to do it yourself. You make up your own mind. He doesn't force anybody. He does the workouts, but if you don't want to do them, you don't have to. It depends on how good you want to be. That's how it is in life." 11It Leader of the Pack .
