At the December 1958 meeting of the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference, Harding was admitted and ·began conference competition in men's sports in the fall of 1959 . Women's sports were sponsored by the AIC in the fall of 1983 and Harding began conference competition in some sports that fall. For the 27 years that the tnen have been competing in the AIC, Harding won 54 conference championships up to March 1, 1986, for 22.9 percent of the championships in an 11-school conference. Harding produced the Cliff Shaw Scholar Athlete for 17 of these 27 years. During this same period, Ouachita Baptist University won 35 conference championships; Hendrix College, the University of Central Arkansas, Southern Arkansas University, and Henderson State University each won 28 championships; Arkansas Tech University won 25. Hendrix had the Scholar Athlete four of the years; Arkansas College, two; and OBU, UCA, ATU, SAUr and the University of Arkansas at Monticello, one each. .. All-AIC recognition came to 240 men and 35 women. All-American . recognition has come 53 times and many Honorable Mentions have been received. - In 1963, at the urging of M.E. "Pinky" Berryhill, former athletic director, coach and chairman of the Physical Education Department, the Athletic: Committee of Harding began awarding an engraved gold watch to the senior athlete whom the Committee deemed the best representative of what Harding wants its athletes to be. The recipient must have earned two intercollegiate letters, consistently given superior effort, made a good . academic record, and exemplified the ideals of Harding in his life and :- conduct. After the death of Coach Berryhill on May 30, 1972, this award was named the M.E. Berryhill Athletic Award.
