1984-1985 Yearbook

Composed of seventeen members, Harding's Jazz Band performed both on and off campus several times throughout the year. With performances ranging from chapel programs to a March tour to the H ouston area accompanying the Spring S ing hosts and hostesses. The group 's schedule grew to be quite demanding and hectic at times . One of the more notable accomplishments of this year's ensemble was its recording a casette featuring its repertoire. The jazz bands recordings were sold during Spring Sing weekend. Steve Thomas, the band's first trumpet player stated that being a member of the jazz band "it's work , but we also have fun ." The group's pianist, Mike Boustead explained, "My participation in the jazz band has given me the opportunity to learn more about a different style of piano playing and jazz arranging. The band was formed each year just before the basketball season begins. It was composed of students interested in supporting and entertaining the basketball team and their fans. Besides playing the "internationally" famous Bison fight song , the band also played many popular tunes such as "Talking in Your Sleep," "25 or 6 to 4" and Jazz Band Pep Band "The Mupper Show Theme." The Pep Band showed its enthusiasm at games by leading the "H.A.R .D. I. N.G. cheer," dressing in some strange apparel and being supportive no matter what the outcome of a game was . The Pep Band was under the direction of Lisa Reed, a music major, working on her master's degree. ~ Jazz Band. Front row: Richards , Lucas, Reed, Scott. Second row; Lee, White, Cox , Pounders.
