Almost the whole student body were sitting on the grass or standing about , watching. I became so excited that I stepped forward and began clapping and yelling, cheering our boys on to a hope-for victory. I feel sure that I have another distinction, dubious though it may be - that of the very first cheerleader of the college. I wasn't elected; I was not appOinted . I hope we won; I don't remember. But I do well remember very vividly what happened next. Every one who had taken part in this unseemingly display was asked to present himself before President Armstrong and make his apologies. I was truly sorry I had . displeased our beloved president ; that I had lowered in some way the standing of the college ; but in my own inner self I felt no guilt. For some 55 years - if I thought of it all - I was still in doubt as to my offense. One day then , I picked up, again, Mr . Sears' superb story of Bro . Armstrong ' s life , " For Freedom."
