1984-1985 Yearbook

Looking Back on a New Beginning 1927 Petit Jean states that the 1926 season was the beginning of interco ll egiate football at Harding since it was the first year the "first" teams of some other co ll eges in the state were played. On October 30, 1928, Harding battled Ouachita Baptist University to a 0-0 tie, the firs t of many close games between these two colleges in a variety of sports. To assess the significance of "new beginnings" in any area, it is always helpfu l to take a panoramic view of what has gone before - to determine ' the "roots" in the past. Although Hard ing had ente red women's teams in Arkansas interco llegiate Conference com - petition in cross coun try, soft - ba ll a nd vo ll eyba ll during 1983-84 , the first yea r the AIC sponsored competition for women , par ticipation was expa nded in 1984-85 wi th the addition of basketba ll (played on a non-con ference basis in 1983-84) and track. Considering that the first women's inter - co llegiate team was fi e lded in the spring of 1981 - and that in softball alone - the women competed will since it takes time to build a program . In retrospect, Harding fielded men's teams in three spor ts du ring 1924 -25, the fi rst year that Ha rding Co llege existed from the merger of Harper College wi th Arkansas Christian College. Teams we re fie lded in fo o tb all, bas k e tba ll a n d baseball. During the first 10 years, whe n Ha rding was lo cated at Mo rrilton, the coaches were st udents most of the time although a fac ultv member or a coach employed by the city of Morrilton now and the n had the responsibility. Also, the Director of Ath letics was usua ll y a st udent as was true the first year when George S. Benson, a senior, but later Preside nt for 29 years from 1936 to 1965, served as Director . The 1925 Petit Jean states that the footba ll coach for the 1924 season was killed in an automobi le accident in Conway on Oct . 25 before a game had been played. The name of the coach was not given in the yearbook but David Riggs, a football player who survived the acci dent stated he was Coach Earle B. Thompson of J udsonia . The season consisted of fou r games against junior college, academy and "B" teams for a 2-2 record. In 1925, the coach was F.M. Kercheville, Professor of Modern Languages; but, in . 1926, student Clyde Matthews, son of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. J .M. Matthews , served as player-coach. The In the October 15, 1929, Bison, editor Ira Dykes , who a lso served as stude nt coach in basketba ll , wrote an editoria l fo ll owing a tie in football with the He nd rix Bull Pups, enti tled , "A Worthy Team." The first paragraph of the editorial read: "Never has Harding College been represe nted by a footba ll team it was more proud of than it is of the 1929 (continued on page 226) Joe Parks Perdue · Memphis.
