College of Arts and Sciences Department of Psychology Adjusts - Courses Aim toward Maturation of Students Helping a ll university st udents to develop a mature, objective approach to life and providing psychology majors with the background needed for successul graduate study were two major objectives of the Department of Psychology. Having taught the general education course , "Psychology of Adjustment ," for two yea rs , some adjustments were made both in the content of the course and the method of teaching it. Dr. Rohert McKelvain became more involved wi th the psychology of sports. He served as Chairman of the Sport Sciences Consulting Group in the Men's Junior Olympic Program of the U.S Gymnastic Fede ration. He served as sport psychologist and a member of the national coaching staff of the Men's Junior Nationa l Team of the U.S. Gymnastics Federation. In this capacity he attended the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He also attended the "Children to Champions: The Effects of Elite Sport on Children" seminar held at the University of Southern California campus. In August, The Official Technical Publication of the U.S. Gymnastic~ Federation carried the first of his six-part article, "Relaxation Response: Strategy for Effective Use in Gymnastics." Dr. Jack Thomas, Chairman of the Dwight Ire land. EdD - Ass!. Professor Robert McKelvain. PhD - Assoc. Professor Lewis Moore. PhD - Assoc. Professor Walter Porter, PhD - Professor Jack Thomas. PhD - Professor & Chairman Department , assisted Dr. Richard Duke in providing career guidance programs for the nine Christian academies in six different states. He also served the Searcy Medica l Center on a part-time basis as clinical psychologist . Dr. Walter Porter had a series of sermons published in Preacher's Periodical , a journal edited by Eddie C loer of. the Bible Department. All members of the Department were active in the Arkansas Psychlogical Association. Dr. Thomas was Newsletter Editor for the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Psychology. He attended the meeting of the Society for Medial Hypoanalysis of Psychosomatic Illnesses in San Diego. Dr. McKelvain attended the Seminar of the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis in San Antonio and the Employer Assistance Programs Consulting Workshop in Dallas. Dr. Lewis Moore served as Director of the Harding University Counseling Center. On a part-time basis he directed the Famil~ Life Center of the College church of Christ. Cheryl Pollard served as a counselor in the Counseling Center , giving special atten· tion , to career planning , good study techniques and positive attitudes about self. t:'~ Teaching the Mind About the Mind .
