Jones has worked hard on his diving techniques and the hard work seemed to start paying dividends in 1983 when he won third in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference Championship Meet. Terry Jones, alth ough , in jured agai1lSt Aust in College still helps his swimming teammates by e"couraging them to swim faster. Since Jones became a diver, the Rogers , Ark. native , has worked during off season with the University of Arkansas coaches trying to improve his performance. The convenience of the University campus to Rogers has been the main reason for Jones working out in Fayeteville. Before the meet with Austin College, during practice, Jones came off the board wrong and hit his hands on the board. The injury was not severe but Coach Boustead and Jones both decided to forego competition against Austin College so Jones would be fully recovered before the conference championships. "He became a cheerleader for the other swimmers and divers," said Chris Turner, team manager. At the conference championhips, Jones again hit his hands on the board . Not only did it hurt physically but the judges counted off. Jones continued and he performed better with each dive. When the meet was over he had taken second place and he scored high enough to go to the NAIA nationals . Thus, becoming the first Water Buffalo, to go to nationals since Mark Trotter pulled off the trick in 1976. With his competition in the nationals marked the end of many accomplishments for Jones. ~ - Shawn Goodpasture and Chris Turner Swimming and Di ving 77
