Thi s curiousity lead her to a successfu l career in cross country. She first became interested in sports in high school when she competed in basketball, track, cross country, and golf. The summer after her freshman year in coll ege she began running longer distances just to get in shape. When Harding offered a cross country, Crump decided to try it. Although she has been running since her junior year in high school, she had never really ran long distances until college. There a re a lot of things that Crump commented on that kept her interested in cross country. "Coach Ted Lloyd worked with individuals and made each runner feel important. I have no doubt that this is why he is such a successful coach. I respect his philosophy and Ch ristian attitude a great deal." Another and probably the biggest factor that drove Crump was desire, the desire to compete. She trained harder thi s summer than any summer before and felt good about the work that wa s done and was ready for the season. She commented, "Even though we didn't win our conference we overcame some important barriers, attained many persona l goals , and had fun. These made the season very much a success ." Crump , being a senior physical education major at Ha rd ing , was an individual champi on in the Arkansas Interco llegiate Conference with a time of 18 :43. She was the first woman at Harding to ever go under the 19 minute ma rk. She was select - ed as a member of the 1983 National Association of In tercollegiate Athletics Academic AIIAmeri can Cross Country Team . Crump wa s named AII -AIC and AII-NAIA District 17 du ring the 1982 and 1983 seasons. Dur~ ing both of these seasons she helped lead the Lady Bisons into a good position in the district meet. She also lettered in two of her years at Harding as a member of the Lady Bisons . - Lynn Hinrich s Women 's Cross Country 63
