After coming to America from Ivory Coast, Didier Vil lard experienced a change in culture as well as in climate. That 's not the only change Villard came to terms with ; he learned to change the way he golfs. Instead of having an in - dividualized game, Villard became a more team o riented person. Villard became accustomed to changes in his life due to the frequent moving hi s family ha s done. Dur ing his life, he has lived in France, Algeria , Ivory Coast, and the United States. Villard came to the United Stales in the summer of 1982 on the Lions' Club Student Exchange. He came to find an American school where he would like to attend college in the fall. He chose Harding because he liked the Scho o ~ of Business. He was especially impressed witt, the go lf team and Coach Watkins. Besides playing golf. Vi ll ard was an avid soccer player. He played center forward fo r the Searcy Steel Soccer Team in the '1983 fall season. Villard also enjoyed a good game of racquetball, tennis, o r tabletennis. At the age of fourteen , Villa rd began to putt golf balls around the Abidjan Country Club in Ivory Coast. Almost every Sunday, from October to May, Villard participated in a tournament at the club. It was in the tou rnament of the Abidjan Country Club champ ionship on January 10, 1982, that Villa rd sco red a remarkable 58 on 18 holes. Hi s ave rage for the 1983 season was 80 strokes. Vi ll ard believed , "golf is a combination of concentration and competition. " He felt that the weather in the spring of '1983 hindered the team from being able to concentrate and gave Coach Watkins a lot of credit for the team's pos itive attutide. Throughout the season, Vi ll a rd was impressed with the amount of support and suggest ions for improvement the coach gave them. ~ - Lyllll Hillriclls Go lf 55
