For the 1983 Bison baseball team , several players and plays stood out to make the season a memorable one , But no individual stood out or made his presence known more than Marty Ninemire . A junior on the squad Ninemire exemplified what leadership was supposed to be. A mainstay at the third base corner of the diamond , Ninemire consistently came up with the hig hit or play that helped the Bisons through the season. "Marty is one of the best athletes we have on the squad this year," Coach Dick Johnson said during the season. "He was born to play the game of baseball . and he could have a possible future in the game . I've really enjoyed coaching him through his career ." Ninemire was showered with All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference honors in 1982 while the Bisons broke even in Ale play with a 7-7 record. In that season , he batted for a .310 average while playing in all 28 games. In 1983, he finished in fourth place among the Bison batters and earned All -Ale honorable mention distinction . "Marty is a class individuaL " one of his teammates said. "He practiced hard and played just as hard every game . There were alot of positions on the team that were not real stable , but everyone knew that third base was Marty 's. " Ninemire is a native of Salem, Arkansas, where he was the most valuable player on his team every year of his high school career. He is married to the former Venita Trett , also of Salem. - Ken Bissell Basebali Sl
