Valentine's Day is most often associated with February, but this year the observance of another holiday on campus took place during this month. Since the students are not here during the Christmas season, the Student Association thought it would be fun to celebrate the New Year ... but during February? The evening began with a free movie, "Pirates of Penzance ," starring Linda Ronstadt. After the movie , it was party time. At last the Student Center doors opened to welcome New Year's Eve Party goers. Almost at once, students entering the Center were assailed by thousands of water bubbles tumbling through the air. Rock music pounded the walls as the crowd mingled; sipping sparkling ginger ale and munching on cookies provided by the S.A. From time to time eyes wandered to the ceiling where hundreds of balloons floated in captivity, held together by transparant sheets of plastic and . waiting to be loosed. Even as the party began the "nerds" were sought out to make ready for the infamous Nerd Contest. Finally the spotlights came on, lighting the make-shift stage and hosts Byron Carlock and Kel· ly Van Patter. While the hosts read his description, each nerd presented his polyester or whatever he wore. S.A. president Kyle Beaty commented "1 have never seen anything like it!" Forty-five minutes and Thirty-five silly little nerds later faculty judges: Dawn Zoller, Joyce Johnson, Jim Henderson, Rod Brewer, and Tom Howard rendered their decision for a male and female finalist group . Winners were picked according to the nerd meter, which was controlled by the mob-like crowd. In the end, Eddie Madden and Terry McClure each won a dinner for two at Western Sizzlin. Other entertainment included music. "Shelter, " a live band composed of Harding students performed and Greg Foster, KHCA campus radio disc jockey, programmed most of the party music. The band performed until 11,59 and the countdown to the "New Year" then began. Led by Beatty, the students watched the seconds tick down. At the stroke of midnight balloons fell from the ceiling and confetti was thrown everywhere by students. "Auld Lang Syne,: the traditional New Year's song was played by "Shelter" and students joined in singing. About 1200 students were present for the party and a good time was enjoyed by all. Beaty remarked, "Everybody was having a good time; it was a lot of fun." ~ - Pelmy Bible and Michael Kelly
