1983-1984 Yearbook

New Asset Debited At the semi-annual meeting of the Board of Trustees on October 28, 1983, approval was given to impl ement at the beginning of the fall 1984 semester a program of graduate studies leading to the Master of Science in Accounting degree. Dr. David B. Burks, Dean of the School of Business, had worked closely with Dr. Steven D. Crow, Assistant Direc tor of the Commission on Institu tions of Higher Education of the North Central Association , in developing plans for the program. Primary impetus for launching this program was the recommendation of the Commission on Professiona l Accounting Education that candidates for the Unified Certified Public Accounting Examination must have completed five years of coll egiate study. Since there were 185 graduates from the School of Business during 1982-83, including 45 accounting majors and since there were 227 declared accounting majors for the fall of 1983, it was necessary fo r Harding to meet the demands of the profession since many of the states to which Harding graduates go for employment have either already implemented the five -year requirement or are in the process of implementing it. Radcliffe to School of Business sistant to the Dean of the School of Business, was appointed director o f the program. Plans were made to employ one addit ional Ph.D., CPA in accounting to supplement the seven CPA's and seven doctorates in the School of Business. The Master's program was designed to enable an accounting major to compl ete the Master's degree in one additional year after earning the B.B.A. degree and for baccalaureates in non-business fields to complete the degree in two' years. This should meet the interest of many students across the country who want to enter the accounting fie ld after completing a liberal arts degree. This made the third graduate program for Harding. The Master of Art s in Bible degree, begun in the fall o f 1952, was the first graduate offering. The Maste r of Education degree in elementary , secondary, and speCial education was b~gun in the fall of 1955. qw - Dr Joseph £.
