- fohn J. Radcliff.. Channel 12 of the White County Cable Television Co. each evening Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 9:00. Mike James served as general manager and program director for the Harding programs which involved students heavily in all facets of planning and production. The Bison, student newspaper , and the Petit Jean, yearbook , provided excellent opportunities for journalism majors as well as oth~r students to get valuable experience in publications. Both publications received All-American ratings from Associated Collegiate Press in 1983. At the meeting of the Arkansas College Publications Association in April, the Petit Jean received the general excellence award and the Bison received second place in both general excellence and sweepstakes. Dr . Heber Taylor, department chairman, set a good example for students with his writing. In addition to several minor articles, he submitted in September for publication a major article on 'Tfle Norwegian Press during the German Occupation. " He also received a certificate of appreciation from Searcy's Fraternal Order of Police for helping them in a writing program. Dr. Dennis Organ served as state sponsor of the Arkansas College Publications Association and he served as a newspaper judge for Associated Collegiate Press. Betty Ulrey served as advisor to the Harding chapter of the Society of Collegiate Journalists. She also served on the Membership Committee of Arkansas Press Women. During the 1983 spring semester, Mrs. Ulrey taught a course in creative writing in the Harding University in Aorence program. After the HUF program, she and her husband , Dr. Evan lflrey , chairman of the Department of Speech, toured several European countries before going to London for three weeks of study at Richmond College of London. Mrs. lflrey took courses in "Literary London" and creative writing while doing research on Dorothy Sayers. Although the department generated the smallest number of student semester hours of any department during the 1983 fall semester, 381, it provided great service to Harding in public relations. It was ahead of several departments in declared majors with S9. During 1982-83, there were 15 graduates with majors in either advertising, journalism or public relations.
