He had accepted by the Journal of Ex· perimental Neurology a research paper, " Role of Nasa l Airf low in Convul sions Induced by Lidocaine in the Rat " During his 1982 spr ing sabbatical l eave, Dr. Wa l ter Porter compl eted a book, "Solomon's Concept of Intelligence," which came from the press in January. The book identified those qualiti es of mind and behavior which contribute to wise versus foolish li v ing. Dr. Thomas was invol ved in 38 hours of in-depth parti c ipation in " Hypnos is and Hypnoanalys is for Positive Sexual Functioning" at the annual meeting o f the Society of Medical Hypnoanalys is in Tampa, Fla. Dr. M cKelva in took the cont inuing educa tion course, " Treatment of Emotional Problems in Physically III Patients," sponsored by the Bay lor Un iversity Co ll ege of Medicine. He also attended the Society for Experimental and Clinical Hypnosis meeting in Indianapolis, Ind. Students Randa ll Anthony, M elvin l. Cochran, Jr., Karla Kell, and Scott Perkins presented papers at the Arkansas Psychological Assoc i a tion ' s sp rin g meeting. Anthony al so presented hi s paper at the Reg ion II Alpha Chi meeting in Shreveport, La. Both he and M iss Kell presented their papers at the Uni versity of Arkansas Graduate Student Confe rence in Fayetteville. Michael Daniel, Neal Hays, Perkin s, and Miss Kelt received ass istantships for graduate study in psychol9gy from four different univers ities~ Department of Sociology and Social Services Creating Counselors Mary Shock was appo inted director of the soc ial work program upon res ignation of Charl es Joiner at the close of the 1982 sp rin g se mester. With th e ass istance of other members of the department, she completed during t he summer the se lf-s tudy report required by the Counse l on Social Work Educa tion. On October 25, M iss Shock was notified by t he counse l t hat full accreditation of the program had 194/Sociology, Speech been continued for the maximum length of t ime. Dr . Van Tate spent the 1982 spring semester in Florence, Italy, as one of the teac hers in t he Harding Uni ve rsity in Florence _ Darrell L. Truill program. He then spent the summer in Kenya in mi ss ionary campaigns, following up several years of mi ss ion work he had done before joining t he Harding facu lty. Dr. Bill Verkler, chairman of the department, attended t he annual meeting of t he Southern Soc iologica l Society and chaired a pane l discuss ion at the annua l co nvention of the Ark ansas Soc iologi ca l Assoc iation . He also attended a workshop on Reality Therapy co nducted by Dr . Wi lliam Gl asser and a work shop on Cognitive Approaches to Marriage, Di vo rce, and Sex ua l Counse ling. Susan Cl ark and Miss Shock attended a workshop on Cogni tive Approaches to Marriage, Divorce, and Sexual Counse l ing. Miss Shock also worked with the Community Act ion Program'" of Central Arkansas in deve lop ing and impl ementi ng a proj ec t to st udy adolescent pregnancy and to reduce the high inc idence of ado lescen t pregnancy in the area. Both students and faculty members we re invol ved in the Department of Speech Barri ers Awareness Day in Searcy . James Johnson, a licensed soc ial worker from Little Rock , employed by Intern ational Rehabilitat ion Assoc iated, taught a soc ial work methods course each semes t er. A ll en Edwards, a soc io logist employed by White County Memorial Hospital , taught "Organiz at iona l Behavior" in the fall and Ma ri beth Downing, dean of women, taught " American Community" in the sp ri ng. Members of the department assisted the Counse ling Center of the Un iversity, served as consul ta nts to Christians who had programs for orphaned or delin- - John J. Radcliffe quent children, and worked with va ri ous commun ity projec t s. ~ From Thespian to Forensic Providing coaches, directors, su perv isors, and sponsors of va rious f orensic and speech arts activiti es, drama produc tio ns, and the campus radio station was a major responsibi lity of t he Department of Speec h. The number o f awa rds rece ived by va ri ous groups dur ing 1982-83, fo ll owing the tradition of several decades, indi cated the high quality of work done by the department. Ft>ur major drama productions were presented in 1982-83 : "Okl ahoma !" and " The Pride of the Brittons," both in November; " The Tavern : A Melodama," in Febru a ry ; and " Heroes of America: A Children's Production," in April. Morri s Ellis and Robin Miller shared responsibilities for direct ing and stag ing all four productions. " The Pr ide of the Brittons" was l ater entered in the state Ameri ca n Co ll ege Theatre Festiva l in Fayetteville
