Miss Winnie Be ll , librari an, spoke on " Security Systems Harding Has One." Miss Bell also attended several meet ings of t he AMIGOS Bibliographic Council. All of the librari ans were act ive in the Arkansas Library Association. Terrill , Travi s Cox and Suzanne Spurri er attended meetings of the AMIGOS Bibliographic Counci l rel eva nt to t hei r specific responsibi l ities . Comment ing on the work of the library, Dr. Joseph E. Pryor, vice p resident for academ ic affai rs, sa id, " Harding Unive rsity has an exce ll ent library whose strength far exceeds the mere number of volumes because the additions have been se lected with care and wisdom. Departments have recommended addition s to pro v id e exce ll en t researc h materia l for t heir respective di sc ip lines. The librari ans are a grea t strength to the academ ic program because they consider themse l ves primaril y as cat alysts to impl ement the most effective use of the library by stud e n ts and fa c u l ty members. On-site accrediti ng teams for years have c ited t he library as a genuine strength of the Unive rsity." ~ Department of Mathematics and Computing Expansion for Figuring Leadership in the National Counci l of Teac hers of Mathemati cs continued to charac terize the facu lty of the Mathematics and Computing Department. Dr . Dean Pries t, chairman of the department, served as chai rman of the Educational Materials Comm ittee of NCTM. Dr. Priest also spoke at the NCTM meeting in New O rl ea ns , La., in November and the NCTM convention in Detroit, M ich., in Ap ril. He also attended a meeting of NCTM committee chai rmen in Was hin gton, D .C. Dr. Bill O ldham spoke at t he NCTM mee ting in Phoenix, Az ., in November and the NCTM convention in Charl otte, N. Car. , in November. Dr. Steve Smith attended the NCTM Name-of-Site meet ing in Little Rock. Dav id Kratzer gave a work ses188/Mathematics, Foreign Languages sion for the NCTM reg ional mee ting in Littl e Rock on "Sol v ing Numeri ca l Prob lems on a Computer. " An interv iew following his talk was presented over the Chan nel 7 telev ision station. Dr. Harmon Brown served as secretary of the Arkansas Coun· ci l of Teac hers of Mathematics. - Darrell L. Tw ill He also served as director of both the reg ional and state mathematics contests fo r the Arkansas Counc il and w rote the test used in A lgebra II. AntiCipating the insta ll at ion of the new academic computer, the curriculum of the department was modified and expanded so that a major in computer sc ience was available to students in t he fall of 1982. New cou rses we re offered in FORTRAN, ASSEMBLER l anguage, and numeri cal ana lysis. Gene Dugger was appoi nted director of the Academic Computer Center and Tim Baird was appOinted director of Software Support for the Academ ic Computer Center. Baird attended the VAX Sy st ems Management School in Dall as last August. Kratzer spent two months during the summer he lping to insta ll t he new VAX computer and deve loping expertise in its operat ion. Dr . O ldham took additional training in microcomputers to faci li tate hi s teaching methods classes for both elementary and secondary mathemati cs teachers. Kratzer made a contribu tion'i:.o the publication, " Block Sp l ittings for t he Conjugate Gradient Method" by Michael Steverwalt of the Los Alamos Sc ientifi c Laboratory and Seymou r V. Parter of the Uni ve rsity of Wisconsin in Madi son. He also served as advisor for Campa igns Northwest. Dr. O ldham served as resea rch representative of the Three Ri vers Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. D r. Sm ith taught t he Sunday morning Bible class for " young marrieds" at the Co ll ege church of Christ and he also served as ass istant coac h of the University baseball team and, during the summer, as coac h of t he Searcy Ameri can Legion Baseball Team . New to the faculty for 1982-83 was Randa ll Maddox, the recipient of the Charles Grey Pitner Mathematics Award presented at the 1982 May graduation. For t he 1982 fall semester, the Department of Mathematics and Computing generated 3,494 student semester hours of c red it and had 152 declared majors, 104 of whom we re in computer science. - Chris Qe; For 1981-82, there we re 18 majors who graduated including 13 in ' mathematics, and five in computer applications. ~ Department of Modern Foreign Languages Parlez-vous? Although only six modern fo reign language majors we re included in the 566 bacca l au rea te m ajo r s compl eted duri n g 1981 -82, the Department of Modern Foreign Languages made a valuable contributi on to Harding's academic program. It servI ed the needs of several departments that required o f their majors one or more years of a modern foreign langu age. The department took the lead in promoting modern fo reign languages at the hi gh schoo l level. In April , more than 800 high sc hoo l students attended the foreign languages festival condu cted on campus. Majors in the department assisted faculty members with the multifaceted program designed to stimul ate greate r interest in foreign l anguages among hi gh schoo l students. Members of the department were a lso active in state organizations. All of the faculty attended the meetings of the Ar ka nsas Foreign Languages Teac he r s Assoc i a tion . Drs.
