The team parti c ipated in free enterpri se competit ion agai nst 200 other un iversity teams. The fa l l o ri entat i on in D a ll as presented the beginning of the challenge to young people seeking busi ness ca reers to dev ise and implement programs that would help preserve the competitive Amer i ca n business system. Car lock sa id of the team's work, "Free enterprise is the best economic system a country can have. Thi s awareness has made us realize it is a system we must preserve in order for America to continue in its greatness. Ou r only al ternat ive is socia li sm." "-<:C: Because of the cumulative effort of a ha ndf~ 1 of students who wanted to continue thei r high school Future Business Leaders of America experience, Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), an organi zation for business majors and minors, was started on the Harding campus thi s yea r. And it grew to a membership of 54. " It just sta rted, but we've been trying to get it for a long t ime," sa id Ellen Reid , pres ident of PBl. The co ll eg iate level sister club to FBLA, PBL is a nati onw ide business organiz ation. According to Reid, " the purpose of PBL is to better fac i l itate the transition between schoo l and the business world." Under the leaders hip of Reid and advisor Dr. Don Diffine, PBL provided conferences and guest speakers, including David M artin, representing . a market ing research firm in little Rock, to aid in the transition from school to the ac tual business world itself . Members of PBL participated in sta te competitions in Littl e Rock in April. Wi nners of the state competitions went to the national conference in Sa n Francisco, which one PBl member described as "a pretty big dea L" In the first year of its existence, Harding's PBL chapter managed to get one state officer - Ellen Reid was chosen p'ublic relations director for the state , orga ni za tion.~ Applying mana'gement princip les in simul ated business situations and making top dec i- . sions was the goal of the 1983 I Business Team. The seven team members along w ith the ir sponsors, Jim Henderson and David Tucker, competed against 23 other sc hools from the United States, Ca nada and Western Europe. The Graduate Business Assoc iation ' of Emory University in Darrell L Tru itt At lanta, Ca ., sponsored the business game and was respons ibl e for its origin. The game was di vided into two parts. The first part was the simul ated portion in which the team, taking on t he responsibility of top management, made decisions for their company concerning production, marketing and finance. The team transmitted their decisions by te lep hone to the computer in Atlanta. A total of ten decisions we re made over a period of fi~e weeks beginning on January 24. On Marc.h 4.-5 the team and sponsors went to Atlanta f or the final rounds of competition. It consisted of a case anal ys is with oral presentations and a second simul ation dec iding the overall w inner. A banquet and awards ceremony concluded the 1983 Games. Harding's Business Team has experienced success in the past and the members of thi s year's team worked together to cont inue that success. ~ The purpose of the Data Processing Management Association was to further the education of systems analys is and computer sc ience majors by exposi ng the stude"tits to Chri stian business princ ipl es and " real world" concepts in the job field. In an effort to broaden the c l ass room and textbook experi ence, members of DPMA sponsored a small business sys tem semi nar invo lv ing all data processi ng organi za tions in the area. Producing a directory of these local organ izations was one of t he proj ects of the group. M embers of the group attended a program conducted by John • Nunna ll y, d irec tor of adm inistra- , ti ve compu ti ng, in which he di scussed fourth generation softwa re - a term familiar to most students majoring in the field of computing. Member Phil Berry sa id of the assoc iation, " It is a good way to meet peopl e in your field and to make contacts for job possibilit ies.
