New Honor Society Sets High Academic Standards The 89 members of the Epsilon Omicron chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, national nursing honor society, inducted 21 new members in February in a forma l ceremony. To be considered for Sigma Theta Tau, eac h prospective member was to have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average and be in the nursing program as an undergraduate or as a ' graduate with a BSN and a nursing degree. An invitation to become a member did not depend so lel y on the student's grades. Members of the society were also chosen according to their invo lvement in community promotion of nursing and leade rship qualities. "Sigma Theta Tau was organized to encourage and recognize superior scholarship and leadership achi evement at the undergraduate and graduate leve ls in nursing, " sa id Jerry Mayhan, t reasurer of the society and ass istant professor of nursing. The honor society sponsored a few activ ities including a recept ion and lecture from a scholar of the Littl e Rock Medical Cen ter. On April 22 t he society sponsored a writer's workshop ca lled "How to Write for Research Publi shers and Research Seminars." Included was a luncheon and three-hour sem inar with guest speakers from Little Rock.~ Kappa Pi , art honor soc iety, drew its members f rom the skill - ed Harding art majors. The organ118/Honor soc ieties izat ion provided an oppor tun ity for students w ith simi lar interes ts to work and learn together outside of the regu l ar class time. To encourage art students and to create inte rest in the ir work, Kappa Pi and the Art Guild sponsored an art sa le in front of Stevens A rt Ga ll ery early in the fall semester. l ater in the year Kappa Pi inv ited area jun io r high and high schoo ls to present thei r art work in a W hi te County art show. President Hugh Gask ill commented, " High school art students need competition to encou rage them in thei r work, in muc h the same way as athl etes." The annual Art Fest highli ghted the year for Kappa Pi during Spring Sing weekend. A ll Harding students we re invited to show the ir a r t wor k wh i c h was displayed in the ping-pong room of the Student Center. This provided an oppo rtun ity for artists from other majors to exh ibit their artistic abilities. For seni o r Kappa Pi member Darrell Truitt, the o rgan ization was ve ry spec ial : " I rea ll y enjoy being a member of Kappa Pi because of the honor involved, but more important ly because I like working w i th such creat ive people."~ Sigma Tau Delta, English honor soc iety, inducted 16 new members in the fal l.
