nate, was a l s~ the first ;oman on Hardi ng's in terco llegiate team. Althoug h Harding was inferi or in enro llment to most of her opponents, t he Hard ing team p l aced t hird in t he regiona ls. O rgan fe lt tha t Hard ing had a lot to be proud of and t hat her reputation as a competitor would continue to grow. ~ Harding' s chap te r of College Republicans was again very active t hi s yea r. A major eve nt was the guberna torial race involvement. Pres ident Blair Bryan sa id, "We ca rried a phone bank th is yea r for the purpose of informing White County about the issues and stands of Governor Frank White. We also canvassed some areas, handed out f lye rs and conducted interviews w ith White County c iti zens. Our suppor t centered aro und W hi te, Ed Bethune, and Chuck Banks. " Commenting on the purpose of Col lege Republicans, Bryan saId, " The main objective is that ou r group provides an educational experience for the students here at Hardi ng. It first shows the students t he American political system and lets them take an active part in that system. This enab les them to better understand wha t it takes to elect a candidate and what the polici es are of that candidate. It reall y gives the student a chance to form opinions on American poli c ies and po liti ca l playforms ." There we re many speakers inv ited for the spring semester for t he purpose of encourag ing invo lvement in .. politics. Co ll ege Republicans invited any and all comers regardl ess of political persuasion. ~ Although small in number thi s year, Harding's Dactylology Club dedicated itse lf to encouraging in terest in t he deaf language among students on campus. The " Oac " c lu b emp has i zed knowledge of this langu age t hrough signing classes hel d every Tuesday evening. Becky Leavell, president of the c lub, directed this cl ass. The club also travelled to severa l nearby congregations to share in fellowship with other Chri stians interested in the deaf ministry. Among these congregations, the club v isited Sylvan Hills " n Little Rock most often. Because of the close proximity of this congregat i on, the club members trave ll ed to little Rock on the second Sunday of each month. Leave ll fe lt this was very ; beneficia l for t ho se c lu .... members just learning to sign. " The dea f ministry at Sylva n Hill s is much larger than the one at the Co ll ege congregation. The t rips to little Rock opened us up to a broader deaf cultu re, whi ch enab led us to be more effective in our work here," sa id Leave ll. Because of this club, the hearing are ab le to learn to com-" muni cate w ith the non-hearing. Sign language is just another link in t he chain of communication and because of the Dactyo logy Clu b, another gap was bridged t hi s year. ~ Spec ial interest groups/11 5
