American Studies Students Gain Insight on Houston Tour The American Studies Program was estab li shed to expose members and other students to national leaders and show them a better way of li fe with Ame ri ca's free enterpri se system. The program was compr ised of approximately 120 members and open to majors in the School of Business or those in the fields of history or politica l science. They were required to mainta in a 3.0 grade point average on 45 completed hours. The organi zat ion cons isted of two parts. Trips and tours made up one part. In the fall 54 members traveled to Houston whe r e they v i s ited many businesses such as Arthur Andersen and Compa ny, the Pennzoil Corporation, the A ll ied Bank of Texas and NASA. Students learned what was in100/Ame ri can Studies volved in running a major c ity when they visited the mayor's office, city po li ce headquarters and other related places. Senior member Byron Car lock sa id, "The trip was fantastic. We got 'hands-on' experi ence in the fi eld of pol itics." The other part of the program was made up of guest speakers coming to the campus . Lectures were open to Un ive rsity students and t he public. When asked about the speakers, Carlock said, " I think the American Studies Program is probably one of the most enlighten. ing programs offered at Harding. No other way cou ld students experience such a broad variety of speakers and become as we ll· acquainted with America ' s po liti cal and economic systems. Because Harding is a center among American conservat ive circles, we're fortunate to be chal lenged and en l ightened by such fine dign itaries."
