Art Pitt Brings Expertise In Ceramics to Dept. Paul Pitt returned to the Art Department at the beginning of the fall semester following a two-yea r leave of absence to complete the Master of Fine A rts degree at Memphis Sta te University. He brought to the department a high level of expertise in ceramics. During June, Elizabeth Mason conducted a specia l program in art at the Harding University Center in Florence, Italy. While in Europe, she conducted several research projects in art history, her major teaching area. Last spring, Mrs. Mason. who retired as chai rman of the department in 1978 after building an outstanding undergraduate art program and designing the Stevens Art Cente r, was recognized at the National Art Education Associat ion meeting in Chicago for her 25 years of outstanding ser - v ice to 'art educat ion in A rkansas. In June, Dr. Faye Doran attended the summer missions seminar at Abilene Christian University and then spent t he remainder of the summer in Guatemala assisti ng the missionaries and studying Guatema lan art. She prepared a slide-tape series on Guatemalan weavings and costumes fo r use in her weaving class and for conducting workshops . In the crafts division of the White County Arts Festival, Dr. Doran took first place with her off-loom weaving entry, "Crack in the Cosmic Egg." In the fall, she had five weavings exhibited at the State Capitol by the state Department of Parks and Tourism. In February , she organized the Central Arkansas Weavers ' Guild Exhibition in Stevens Art Gallery. . She also conducted an Inkl e l oom workshop for the Arkansas Weavers' Guild and presented a prog ram on Guatema lan weavings. Don Robinson attended the national meeting of Christ ians in the Visua l Arts in Grand Rapids, Mich igan. He also completed three pa intings, two of which were purchased by local 70· Art collectors. John Keller attended the Southeast College A rt Con· ference in Oxford, M ississippi. He also conducted some work· shops in waterco lor. Two special studies were made during the year under the direction of c hairman Don Robinson. A feasibility study was made re lative t o a major in inter ior design. A study was also made on an advertising art major. The department recommended the addition of a major in adverti sing art leading to the Bachelor of Fi ne Arts degree. During t he year , the lighting system of the gallery was completely renovated. In September, Paul Pitt exhibited a oneman show and Dr. Doran had exhib ited Guatema lan weav· ings. In October, the art of Will Sampson, motion picture actor , was exhibited in the ga llery. In January, all of the members of the art facu lty comb ined efforts to exhibit a show in the gallery. Stan Green, part-t ime teacher of advert ising art and sports in· formation director for Harding, received two All-Ame ri can awards from the National Association of Interco llegiate Athletics for sports brochures. He also attended the regional meeting of the Counc i l for Advancement and Support of Educat ion in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In November , art majors were taken to the Delta Art Show and the Arkansas Arts and Crafts Fair in Little Rock. In April, they toured the art gallery in Memphis. Students Chr is Davis, Jerry Keller, and Ted Rae won rib· bans in the White County Visual and Performing Arts Counci l Arts and Crafts Show held in the Carm ichael Commun i ty Center in Searcy. ~ The art honor society, Kappa Pi, spent its year attempting to inst ruct its members in their major field.
