Staff Contributes to Effective Operation of University Contributing significant ly to the smooth, effective operation of Harding University were more than 400 full -t ime staff members with diversifi ed responsib ilities . Many of these sta ff members had served Hard ing more than 20 years and had turned down offers of more lucrative employment because they were dedicated to the objectives of Hard ing, loved the students whom they served, and enjoyed the fellowship of their co ll eagues. At the annual facuitystaff dinner near the close of the 1980 spring semes ter, Distinguished Sta ff Awards were presenred to Lyle Poindexter , Shop Foreman, and Lavern Richey, Graphics Comput er Operator. More than 650 stu - dent s were employed on campus in pan-time work, earni ng a total o f $600,000. The Studen t Financial Aid Office administered mo re than $8 million dollars in various aid programs during 1980-8 1 with more than $5 milli on being in loans of var ious types. Harding 's default rate of only 0.97 per cent was among the best in the coun try. A lett er from HEW described Harding' s loan program as a " model" and "exemplary." Academ ic scholarships were received by 750 st udents a nd various specialized schola rships were received by 600 st udent s. During the 1980 fall semeste r, the American Heritage Cafeteria fed I,270 st udents and the Patt i Cobb Ca feteria fed 900 st udents.
