"It's so easy always to see the personnel deans in terms of discipline," Dean Downing observed. "You cannot imagine what a complex this gives us! Really, we're warm, friendly human beings who are sincerely interested in people. Too often thi s is overlooked because we must discipline - the way any father or mother does!" Supervi s in g the resident assistants in the men ' s dormitories and overseeing the men's social club pledge week activities were major responsibilities of Eddie Campbell , Dean of Men. He also spent many hours with young men helping them to resolve problems and to become adjusted to the Harding community. Campbell attended the Christian Counselor s Seminar in Abilene, Texas. He was elected to membership in Who ' s Who in the Southwest. He was an elder in the Downtown church of Christ and served on the Board of Directors of White County Chapters of the American Red Cross. Speaking about his work, Dean Campbell stated , " Sometimes it is tempting to get depressed in student personnel work because of having to deal with prob lems so much. It is gratifying, however, to see the progress that is being made by students. Probably no other facult y member is in a better position to see persona l and spiritual growth than is a student personnel administrator. " Recognized nationally as well as by hi s colleagues in Arkansas, Dr. Harry D. Olree, Athletic Director and Chairman of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation , served as Chairman of Di strict 17 of the National Assodation of Intercollegiate Athletics and as one or two NAJA representatives on the Board of Directors of the National Operating Committee for Standards for Athletic Equipment . Clree, who received a 1979 Distinguished Teacher Award , found time to teach· ·a limited load each semester. He also se rved as an elder of the College church of Chri st. "The athletic program at Harding is divided into three basic areas, " Olree commented. "The service program provides all students instruction and practi ce in the basic sport skill s. The intramural program provides every student an opportunity to participate in competitive sports, regardless of his skill. The intercollegiate program provides opportunities for those possessing a high level of skill to participate against students from other colleges and universities. Close supervision is given all sports to insure that they operate on an educationall y sound basis." 67 Administration
