Personal Fulfillment Found at Harding Holding Its annual fall meeting in the Heritage Room on November 7. the Board's primary consideration was to fiscal matters - Phase IV of the Development Program, the budget for 1980-81, the remaining part of the building program, and endowment. The audit of the financial status of the institution at the close of the 1979-80 fiscal year revealed (hat Harding had again operated " in the black , " making more than 40 consecutive years that this has been achieved. More than 300-members strong, the President' s Deve lopment Council, met twice on campus to hear reports on the state of the Un iversity and to meet with student and faculty groups. Selected because of their willingness to represent Harding in their communities throughout the United States, Council members were valuable as advisors. The Council was also involved in fund raising efforts and in student recr uitment. They also provided the Placement Office with information on the job market in their communities. The recipient of a Di stinguished Teacher Award at the 1980 May Commen cement, Dr. Wyatt Jones , DireclOr of Graduate Studies, exemplified in the class room the qualities that he taught as a professor of education. At the undergraduate leve l, Dr. Jones taught educat ional psychology; at the graduate level, he taught educational soc iology and research methods. Dr. Jones was active in several professional organizations in education. He attended annual meetings of the Southern Graduate Deans Association, the Arkansas Graduate Deans Association, and the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. He also attended a National Science Foundation Chautauqua Short Course on "Problem Solving." He assisted extensively in developing the NeATE self-study that was completed in December. Continuing effort was given to building the graduate program in Searcy leading to the Master of Education degree. During the tltree 1979-80 commencement 66 Administration ceremonies, a total of 30 M.Ed. degrees were conferred, an increase of four over the previous year. He and his wife participated in the Life Sessions of the College church of Christ and on Sundays he preached for the church in Poughkeepsie. Putting into practice the knowledge she had learned through graduate study in counseling that earned She Educational 5pedalist degree, Maribeth Downing, Dean of Women, spent many hours each week counseling girls in her office or visiting with them in the dormitories and apartments. She also supervised the resident assistants for women and administered the regulations for pledge week for women's social clubs. Dean Downing made plans to take a leave of absence for doctreal study at the University of Nebraska during 1981-82. She attended the Christian Counselors Seminar in Abilene, Texas, and the Family Symposi um in Linvoln , Nebraska. She was elected to Who's Who in American Women. During the summer of 1980 she participated in International Campaigns in England and Scotland. - Dun Hollund
