348 Senior Wildcats show competitive spirit During the 1980-1981 basketba ll ~eas (} n , the Wildcat s showed : hal they were vastly improved from last year. With new head (oach Bruce Davenpon, the team showed thai il cou ld compe te well wi th jU~1 about anybody. Coach Davenport came from Wonde.. view, Arkansas , where he look his tcams to the Siale playoffs several limes. Thi s abili ty to develop a winning spirit produced a record of ~ ix wi n ~ and eleven losses. However, the 'Cms losl several games by only a few points. Tht' Wildca ts began thei r season wi th several heartbreakers. They 10:,1 the fi rst game (0 DeVall 's Bluff in overtime and then trave led to HaLcn and lost by only three point !) . But when Hazen ca rne to the ' Cat s coun , victory came in the final seconds of the game by two point s. Th is marked the fir st time t hat the senio rs had beaten Haze n in any sport. Whe n the Di strict 5·A Central Conference began, the Cats lost the fir st few games . When they met the Deaf Schoo l, they sta rt ed a big four game winning streak, including the defeat of the number one team , the Mayflower Eagles, in overt ime wi th a las t second shot made by John Ed Hi gginbot ham. The Wil dcat s fin ished the con· ference with s ix wins a nd eight losses. Being chosen to the All· Count y team was J o hn Ed Higgin· botham. He led the Wildcats in sco ring with Randy Richey rol· lowing second. Scott Fin ley added excell ent court sense at the guard position .
