If a balter has a high average or has hit several home runs, his season is considered successful. For Mike Moody, the Bison catcher, high ratings in both categories characterized his performance during the 1980 season. Mike hit safely 27 out of 82 times at bat for a .329 average, achieving the second best average of the squad. He also slammed eleven home runs which established a new school record. Moody attributed his success to "pure practice. You've got to work every chance you can and get it on your own." The Texarkana, Texas native had a .913 fielding percentage, one of the highest on the team. His position makes the statistic even more impressive. For his deeds, Moody played for the All-AIC team for the third year in a row and was the winner of the team Most Valuable Player award. He 71anaged to survive all that, however, flumility intact. "I didn't expect to be on the conference team at all because there were so many good players in the league," he commented. Mike. a business management major who is married to the former Deana Lafferty. began playing catcher in high school. "I had played third base and a little pitcher but there were an overabundance of players for those positions. We only had a couple of catchers so I figured I had the best chance to play there," explained Moody. In the summers he played American Legion ball at Texarkana to keep in practice. During this time he had aspirations toward playing professional baseball . "I thought about t rying to play pro ball but there are a lot of really good players who never make it ," commented Moody. "I'm just glad 1 decided to come to Harding instead." - Ken Bissell 307 B_ball
