In sports, leadership is usually placed on the shoulders of the senior individuals on the team. But the 1980 Bison track team had only one senior member, Perry Fraley. Fraley explained his leadership role, saying, "The biggest thing I had to do was to try to motivate the other learn members. Actually, I was on the Same level as everyone else." Fraley has been at Harding for four years. While on campus, he has left his mark on the Bison record books. The Scottsdale, Arizona native has owned or presently owns three records. In his freshman year he cleared fifteen feet even, establishing a new record in the pole vault, which has since been upped to 16'9" by Mike Lynch. Later he set the Decathalon record which was also broken by Lynch. Last spring he set a record in the three meter dive for the diving team. The senior marketing major felt that if he were to dedicate himself. he could improve on his best vault of 16'4". "I think that I had a lot more potential but I guess that track wasn't my number one priority. I try to place the Lord first in everything I do, then my studies come second, and track , third," Fraley commented. "I once thought about really getting motivated and putting everything I had into an Olympic tryout, but the Lord sort of placed things in front of me and J guess He didn't feel that it was best for me." Fraley, who has watched Lynch develop into a top·notch vaulter, feels that he could compete on the international level some~ day. "He has the ability to reach 18 feet before he's finished," Fraley said. Looking back, Fraley valued his track ex· perience. "I really have enjoyed track. It has had a definite impact on my experience at Harding because of the traveling and the chance to meet people." he explained. During his years. Fraley enjoyed being selected as member of the All-Ale team his junior and senior seasons and All-American his senior year. _ Ken Bissell President Cli/ton Ganus chats with Perry Fraley during a frack meel 01 Alumni Field. 305 Track
