But one honor was bestowed on a non-runner. Coach Ted Lloyd was selected as the AIC and NAIA District 17 Coach of the Year by his fellow conference coaches. Lloyd. a native of Spring Hill, Kansas, is a familiar name to track and cross country across the nation. He ended a three year stint last summer as president of the NAIA Track Coaches Association. Nineteen seventy-four was a high point in his career. That year he was asked to serve as the head coach of the United States track and field team that competed in the Brazilian AAU Games in Rio de Janeiro. Panama asked Lloyd to serve as the coach of its national team in 1969 and 1970. He recruited and trained Panamanian athletes for the 1970 Central American-Carribean Games. In the sixteen day event, his team placed fourth out of the twenty-three teams entered in the competition. During the years Lloyd has coached cross country. his teams have won eleven of fourteen championships, ten of them in the last decade. Lloyd attributed this continued success to several factors. "Our runners have a lot of tradition, and this draws quality runners to our school," commented the coach. Dedication was also cited as a factor. "Dedication to running is similiar to dedication to spiritual life. Our runners are dedicated spiritually and dedicated as runners," Lloyd said. With all of the members re'turning from the )979 Conference championship team, Lloyd was blessed with an array of veterans led by the senior quartet of Richard Teixeira, John Sills, John McAlister, and Randy Jackson. "Those seniors are a super bunch of guys." commented Lloyd. "They all provided a leadership role for the team." As for individuals, Lloyd acknowledged Teixeira. "Richard won three conference championships and was All-American for two years. He is very unselfish and deserves all the credit he gets," explained the coach. - Ken Bissell VIEWING the field at the Bison BOQsters Invitational meet, Coach Ted Lloyd refers to his notes on the Bison runners. 303 Cross Country
