These gruesome judgement days haunted spare time, inch ing thei r way into s tudents' minds during campus movies and "hot dates," Student s insisted on hav ing limits se t. Management theories mai ntained that one Deadlines worked better at his own speed , motiva ting himself to accomplish a task . The first question one usually asked when an assignmen t was made , however, was, "When is the deadline?" That question , more often than not , translated subconsciously into , "How long do I have to goof off?" The principles app lied primarily to academic endeavors but were easily appl icable to a host of activities associated with the community ' lifestyle of a college campus . The bureaucracy of college life demanded that it was so. For instance, if one awoke past eigh t , he mi ssed breakfast and was destined to go hungry unti l lunch when the cafeteria reopened. Chapel was a dai ly deadline, too - manda tory at 9:00 a.m. ' Mis'sing some deadlines had fiI"\anciai consequences . Campus librarians rnsisted tha t two weeks was long enough to keep any book , and the daily overdue fine of a nickel got expensive if one's memory fai led for any length of time. Parking tickets posed another problem: a two doll ar surcharge was posted if payment was not made within 10 days of the business office's reminder letter.
