50 Houses Harding's 'Halfway' Houses Through the doorway, which is all the men ever see, lies a little hall and an interior door that closes off the fest of the house that consists of four bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a tiny laundry room which is really an unconverted back porch. Two girls occupy each bedroom and split expenses for the washer-dryer, telephone and household items. This is the Ulrey house, a house typical of other Harding campus houses. The houses could be termed "halfway" because they were situated on campus yet structured much differently than a dormitory. Why live in a house? Harding students had several reasons for wanting to live in a campus house, and the University had its own reasons for letting them. Randy Jackson explained one reason for preferring a house to a dorm. ''I'm a runner, and I'm a vegetarian because I really think it helps my running, I'm interested in controlling my diet, and here I'm able to do that.
