Stepping Out Spreading the Word One's Christian attitu'de, actions and presence speak far louder than any foreign word, and through the efforts of International Campaigns about 100 persons in foreign lands are baiJtized each summer. TALKING about their campaign plmls. Brad Watson a"d Martha Co/- lar survey a map of Australia. where they plan to spend tile summer. Campaigns have been conducted in England. Scotlanif. -Wales. Holland, Germany, Brazil, Austria, Switzerland and Australia. Don Shackelford. newlyappointed director of International Campaigns , said, "All students should go on at least one campaign before they leave Harding, for the good it does them and all the good they can do for others." About 100 students and teachers from Christian colleges participated in International Campaigns last summer; about 90 were from Harding. Gary Wilson of Waco, Texas . who went on campaigns with the Chorale, said, "Working in Hanover brought me closer to the Lord, my fellow campaigners and the German congregation, and I learned that Christian love knows no language or cultural barriers. " ~ ;;;:;..::=-= ..=.::.......;.::::::: ~~== The campaigners' work was multi-functional: knocking doors, handing out as many as 10,000 tracts a day, singing in parks and at meetings and doing personal work were just a few of the daily responsibilities. One campaigner noted , "Being part of a foreign congregation and encouraging both the members and the missionaries was fulfilling in itself. No one can know the special bond of love that is formed among the students and the congregation unless he or she personally experiences it." International Campaigns started in 1966 as an effort to estab lish contacts for overseas missionaries. These campaigns differ from other overseas c..ampaigns in that they are only conducted where invited, with the overseas congregations planning the campaigns. L V. Pfeife~, assistant professor Freshmen of Bible. described the strength of the overseas church as "very weak" and said that International Campaigns has been a great boost to overseas evangelism. This year, for the first time, International Campaigns had to refuse some invitations due to a shortage of campaigners. Requests from congregations in Scotland and England were turned down. According to Pfeifer, the shortage was caused by an absence of the A Cappella and Chorale groups, which usually send about 50 campaignt=rs. According to Pfeifer, campaigns will be held in Germany, Holl and, Austria, Brazil and Australia this summer. Before leaving, all campaigners will meet at Camp Wyldewood immediately after graduation for a two-day orientation. ff \ _ Debbie McCabe t'l: Kathry~ Partain • Malvern , AR Rita Payne • O'Fallon, MO GI.nda Peach.
