1979-1980 Yearbook

--~ Someone yawned and asked what time it was. "Six a.m.," came the sleepy reply. As the group finished loading a variety of helmets, lights and ropes into their vehicles, the ques~ tion was raised, "Everybody ready1" Thus began a number of trips to northern Arkansas this year taken by the spelunkers, or cave explorers, on campus. The majority of spelunkers belonged to the CenArk Student Grotto, an of~ fidal chartered member of the National Speleological Sodety. The year began with the usual "beginner's trip" in the fall. Its purpose was to acquaint beginning cavers with the subterranean ecosystem and instruct them in proper caving techniques. Before entering the cave, everyone donned kneepads, gloves and packs and tested their headlamps and backup light sources. Then the trip leader arranged members in single file, staggering experienced cavers as a safety precaution. After exploring a portion of the cave, the group stopped for lunch and briefly extinguished all their lights in order to experience total darkness. This action emphasized the necessity of adhering to NSS safety rules, one of which is that each caver must take along three operative light sources on each trip. After lunch the beginners encountered such obstacles as tight crawlways and jagged breakdowns. While on the trip members had the opportunity to see formations such as cave popcorn, helictites, draperies, gypsum flowers, soda straws and rimstone dams in addition to the more ordinary stalagmites and stalactites. Most formations dazzled the eye with their sparkling. crystal-white brilliance. CenArk members. as do all conscientious spelunkers, practice the Caver's Motto: "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time." - Reggie Garrett and Bruce Cook ty;", CLIMBING thrnllgh Blowing Cave near Cllsn num I" ,"issiotlS major Dale Templeton.
