Patterned after Contact, an organization that is active in seven countries and fifteen American (J " ' ., cities, including Little Rock , Searcy's organization doubled its staff this year and was open from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. seven days a week. Callers at other times heard a recorded message which gave Contact's toll free Little Rock number. Organized in 1974, Hot Line was staffed in the past by Harding students, with aid from Dr. Bill Verkler. Now, however, area residents also work with the pro~ ject. Both residents and students must complete a two-month training program taught by qualified area counselors, including Harding's Lew Moore, Charles JOiner, Mary Shock and Dr. Bob McKelvain. Topics covered included communication; crisis intervention ; loneliness, depression and suicide; active listening; and forgiveness and acceptance. • 1- - L - .
