-,< .. Centerpieces Rounding out the rough spots "H i, is this the Writing Lab7" First-time visitors, some~ what uncertain, typically asked this question. Assured that they were in the right place, students quickly added, "I need some help!" The Writing Laboratory, operated by the English Department as a service to Harding students, was supervised this year by Dr. Larry Long, assistant professor. Working with him as teaching assistants were two graduate students in English, Patricia Harville and Bruce Cook. This year marked Ihe first time that graduate fellowships in English had been offered at Harding. Steve Hughes, a sophomore public administration major from Searcy, said about the Lab, "It helps one with a weak background get on the road to college English, It got me over a lot of the rough spots with a decent grade," Freshman Elizabeth Pearson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana said, "It really helped me a lot grammatically. I came out with a B in English 103, and I'm sure it was because of the Writing Lab," This year's Lab operation differed from that of previous years in several ways. The number of hours per week that the Lab was open doubled from 10 to 20; graduate assistants staffed the Lab instead of advanced composition ~"I (English 281) students and the Lab was available for the first time to all students on a university-wide basis. Previously it had been open only to English 103 students, This brought many students to the Lab for review, practice and advice in preparation for the Junior English Proficiency examination. These changes largely resulted from urging by the English Department to increase the University's emphasis on writing com~ petence.
