264 Centerpieces Petit Jean: the legend Legend has it that in the 17th century a French nobleman named Chavet received permission from the king to explore and claim part of the New World. Chavet was to be married to a young French girl, who asked that they be married before his voyage so she could accompany h'kn"":' Chavet refused because of the danger involved in the trip, so the girl disguised herself as a boy and applied for a position on Chavet's ship . She called herself "Jean" and was hired as a cabin boy. Because of her small size, she was called "Pe tit ," or little, Jean by the crew. After crossing the Atlantic, the ship sailed up the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers to the foot of a mountain. There they were met by friendly Indians who invited them to spend the summer. Her true identity was finally discovered. The next morning she regained consciousness and asked to be carried to the top of the mountain. The Indians made a stre tcher for her and , accompanied by Chavet. bore her to the summit.
