-...... " €lose-ups They've got rhythm Seniors David Osborn and Lee Harris have been playing and singing music together publicly since the eleventh grade when they attended Harding Academy in Memphis. While in high school they performed at various social functions with the third member SPECTRUM member David Woodroof performs for the Searcy Medical Center's Christmas party at the Wyldewood Retreat Center. of their trio, a female Academy student. After graduation she stayed in Memphis, and Lee and David came to Searc)lo- to attend Harding. Their first two years here were filled with the normal routine of studying and extracurricular activities, with Harris joining the Belles and Beaux for two years, 1976-78. Then in the fall of 1978, Osborn and Harris teamed with David Woodroof to perform at several social club banquets, Christmas parties, and Associated Women for Harding fund-raisers. The following spring the Student Association organized an evening of entertainment. Included -were a student concert and a movie. Osborn and Dr. Jerome Barnes, SA faculty advisor, had discussed preparing a show for the concert segment. Osborn and Harris contacted some of their friends and fellow musicians on campus, and rehearsals got underway. Performing at the resulting concert under the title "Spectrum" were Osborn, Harris and Woodroof; Chuck Hicks, on electric guitar and bass; Ed Smith, saxophone; Frank Barker, drums; Janet Price and Mary Ann Cannon, singers; and David Wright on the piano. Afterward the group continued to perform together. Dr. James Carr, assistant to the president, requested some appearances for dates when the official University group, the Time of Day, was not available. The band, which had no name, also performed at the Central Arkansas Christian banquet at Little Rock in May, 1979. The group was jokingly dubbed "Dave and Lee's Ben Tower Band" by Hicks. This occurred in response to one promoter's insistence upon them having a name. Last fall the SA again sponsored a concert, which was held in the Main Auditorium. Two personnel changes were made from the first concert due to individual situaSeniors tions. Joe Finley replaced Smith, and Phil Eudaly replaced Barker on the drums. Finley, who has appeared on occasion as a guest performer with the Time of Day, played electric fiddle , bass and pedal steel guitar. One other change was also made. Mary Ann Cannon had become Mrs. Lee Harris. Later in the semester the group performed at two other functions. The Mack Truck Company Christmas party at the Hilton Inn in Shreveport and the Searcy Medical Center Christmas at Wyldewood Retreat Center. B~ing in a student-sponsored rather than a Universitysponsored group had its advantages, Osborn said, "The time factor was critical to me. I didn't have time for a regular school group, so this gave me an outlet." Hicks commented, "It gave me a chance to work with a .live audience, and you need that to stay in shape musically," - Bruce Cook '\ il HEUN ROGERS. PiggoH, AR .
