Contestants were judged on appearance, poise, personality .. talent , and their historical and cultural knowledge of Cherokee Indians. The judges, one of whom was the governor of Oklahoma, also considered leadership qualities and extracu rricular activities. Lisa displayed her talent in the contest by reciting the beginning of the 121st Psalm in Cherokee and English and singing "The Lord's Prayer" while simultaneously interpreting it in Indian sign language. Along with the title came a $1000 scholastic scholarship and a $500 wardrobe scholarsh ip. Her travel expenses were also covered, and a twin-engine airplane , complete with chaperone, regu larly flew to the Searcy airport to pick up Lisa. "I missed a lot of Mondays and Fridays, " she said, "but my teachers were very understanding. " Lisa attended the annual Fall Festival celebra ti on at Cherokee, North Carolina last year, which lasted a week. She se rved as the hostess and also helped judge the Little Miss Cherokee Princess contest. She also dedicated a rock at Cookeville, Tennessee which was thought to have been placed on the Trail of Tears by migrating Cherokees. Phillips appeared at the Will Rogers Centennial Celebration in Claremore, which is also Rogers' home town. Rogers was onequarter Cherokee, as is Phillips. This spring she appeared with actor Will Geer, a fellow Cherokee, with the American Indian Travel Commission in San Diego. Phillips said she usually sang religious songs at the functions she attended; among her favorites were "Amazing Grace," "Precious Memories" and "The Lord's Prayer." Last summer she worked at an Indian hospital in Claremore as an assistant nutritionist. She spent most of her time in the field, however. talking to the public about health and sanitation practices, and counseling diabetics . Lisa also spent part of last summer on International Campaigns with the A Cappella, which held campaigns in Western Europe. She laughingly recalled the two young sons of an English missionary. "I was the first real Indian they had ever seen," she said. ''They really got a kick out of playing cowboys and Indians and shooting me with their toy guns." As Miss Cherokee, Lisa is primarily a goodwill ambassador for the Cherokee people. "I'm eager to see the Cherokees progress to a better way of life," she said, "bu t at the same time I'm striving to uphold and preserve Regina Officer; A Cappello; Alpha Chi ; Belles and Beaux; International Campaigns; Michigan Campaigns; (enorl\.
