Music Belles, Beaux display personality, versatility Many factors separated the Belles and Beaux from other musical groups on campus, giving them a personality all their own. One factor was the style of music performed. Consisting of some 31 songs, the group's repertoire ranged from the lovely Commodores' hit , 'Three Times a Lady ," to the up-tempo "Take a Chance on Me" by Abba , t<~. the zany Ray Stevens classic, "Gitarzan. " "We show people that Christians can enjoy today's music," said four-year member Gayla Shipp. Echoing her view was guitarist Terry Edwards: "We show young people a musical alternative," he said. A second difference was the amount of eye contact with the audience, directly related to the style of music and size - 13 members - of the group. Said BEllES AND BEAUX. Shipp, "In the A Cappella and Chorale groups your eyes are fixed on the director , but in Belles and Beaux you look at the audience. It's more personal because you have the chance to be an individual. " A third distinction was the group's purpose. Similar to that of the musical trio Time of Day, members served as "ambassadors of good will for Harding University and Christian education, " and according to Ganus, "spread the word about Harding in a way that others could not. " Stated Shipp, "It 's a ministry ... anything you do for God that utilizes your talent is a ministry." How did this year's group differ from other Belles and Beaux groups? 'This group is as versatile as any I've been associated with ," said Ganus. 'There's better variety in the show than in the past , and the soloists are better."
