Department meets changing needs With the changing needs of students in mind, the Home Economics Department added a major in textile mercilandising and a course in "family relationships." Two organizations within the department, the American Home Economics Association and the Dietetics Club, sought to aid students in becoming more familiar with their respective fields. More specifically, the purpose of AHEA was to help students majoring in home economics or related areas "to become more aware of opportunities in home economics and for self improvement," according to member Selma McDougle. 'Consumer fair' Twice during the year AHEA sponsored a "consumer fair." In the fair, members provided the public with consumer bulletins and other informational literature concerning a broad range of consumer products. At the group's regular meetings members heard speakers from CHATTING with Jan Lee . Dr. Mildred Bell , professor of home economics. discusses a class project. home economic related fields, including a local cosmetologist. For the second time, AHEA hosted a banquet for its members in the spring. Melinda Meadows, a senior member, served as secretary of the student section of the Arkansas Home Economics Association. while Paula Lit land headed the nominating committee. Also, Miss McDougle presented a paper on "Diet and Heart Attack" at the annual meeting of the Arkansas association. Distributing nutrition information For dietetics majors, the Dietetics Club was involved mostly in communicating information about proper nutrition. The club began a "Get Set" project designed to encourage improved eating habits. In the spring the group worked with nursing program members in providing information to the public about special diets. Student Robin Parsley displayed information on "Korean Education in Young Years" at the state meeting of the Arkansas Associa tion for Children Under Six. ..... Prof Mrs. Crockett served as chairman of the AACUS Parenting Committee and as state historian. The department directed a nursery school and a home manag~ ment house to offer vocational majors the experience needed in these areas. Alice Joiner directed an afternoon kindergarten conducted in the facilities of the nursery school. I Modern laboratories in the Olen Hendrix Building facilitated the instructional program.
