1979-1980 Yearbook

Students put skills to work Tradition greeted some 50 returning and novice staffers as they began work on this year's book. Traces could be found almost everywhere one looked , from the familiar , knowing faces of sponsor Dr. Joe Pryor, company representative John Clark and patron Myra Lou Tyee to the accolades awarded the 1979 Petit lean, some of which included a 20th consecutive All-f..merican rating and a second-place finish in the Arkansas Collegiate Pr~'5s Association competition. The staff was talented , experienced and well-traveled. individual members had lived in Thailand, Malaysia , Australia , Norway, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Singapore. The three graduate students , two fifth-year seniors and five seniors on the staff provided leadership in the areas of writing, editing, layout and photography. English and Journalism (contin"ed from page 189) largest in the school's history , containing 448 pages - 16 more than last year 's book. A record 600 rolls of film were shot in an effort to cover extensively the multitudes of activities on campus, Hundreds of hours were also spent in interviewing faculty, staff and students. The theme of this year's book, "Looking Back on a New Beginning," was an attempt to both tell the story of the year as it happened and then evaluate what happened. New spiritual , social and institutional beginnings occurred as both students and Harding grew side-by-side. The visual element of the theme, a line drawing of Petit Jean Mount~in , . reflected the original beginning of Harding in the town of Morrilton. This element was placed on the lower portion of each division-page spread to further tie the book together. Three sections took up approximately one-half of the book, Scholars, with 76 pages; Classes, with 68 pages; and Academy with 65 pages.
