Paul Pollard continued on leave . to work toward the PoD degree in New .Te~tamen t at Baylor Uni versity. During the spring semester, Dr. Jimmy Allen took a sabba tica l leave to complete a commentary on the book of Hebrews . He also did work in Guatemala for a month. 'JOY is a tool for us to serve people. It has taught me a lot about leadership and responsbility.' - Kendra Gorrell Dr. James D. Bales, woo was a charter member of the Evangelical Theological Socie ty , attended its annual meeting in Dearfield, Ill. He also published two books during the year: No t Under Bondage and The Jrrespon s ibl es or Righteousness Through Rationalization. Dr . Allen also published a book, Foolishness of God. Dr. Don Shackelford edited one issue of Alternative magazine entitled "Sola Fide." One-an-one rapport "Come Share the Being" was the theme the Conquerors sought to communica te in their you th rallies this year. Eight years ago the Conquerors had about seven members. The group grew to 18 thi s year to better meet the needs of their audience . Their goal was';:w help young people find out how much life can really mean." The Conquerors traveled throughout the Southwest this year to conduct their rallies. They used skits, puppets , sli des, singing and speeches to communicate their theme. According to three-year member Steve Meeks, their approach was different from conventional youth rallies. They tried to reach a one-an-one rapport with the students th rough discussion groups. Said one Conqueror, "I have learned kids can change and be a lo t more than we expect them to be." A tool to serve people JOY's purpose, sa id chairman Kendra Gorrell , is exemplified in its name - Jesus first , Others second , Yourself las t. There were 11 committees that sought to fulfill that purpose in different capacities on campus and in the community . The Welfare Committee, which worked with the Sunshine School. and the Hospital Committee , which visited patients twice a month, were two of the committees reaching ou t to the community . .... WoN s..., PIID • Prof . , Bible The Christian Sisters Aid, Fellowship and Devotional Committees were campus-centered, providing babysitting, speakers, devo tionals and other opportunities to se rve and grow spiritually. Other JOY committees included Little Sisters, Evangelism, Bible Hour, Elderly , High School and Publicity. While serving others, JOY members found many benefits for themselves.
