country. Serving as an elder of the College church of Christ and chairman of the finance committee, he also spoke at his home congregation during the year. He served on the Board of Directors of First Security Bank and the Chamber of Commerce in Searcy and of Finest Foods in New Orleans. He was also an active member of the Searcy Lions Club. Continuing his open-door policy, Dr. Ganus welcomed visits from students who wished to speak with him. He otherwise had contact with students through his involvement in faculty-student intramural sports playing rag-tag football, handball and softball.lim\ A man who always enjoys his assignments E asHy identified by his white hair, Dr. Jimmy Carr served his tenth year in association with Harding as assistant to the president. "It has been one of the best years since I've been on the scene," he said. Describing his responsibilities, Dr. Carr stated he was involved in a broad range of activities. "What I do is varied; and for this 1 am most grateful," he commented. Along with working with the Associated Women for Harding, Bisons Boosters and community relations activities, "I get involved in assignments that President Ganus assigns me," he explained. "These are numerous and varied and always interesting. And I haven't gotten one from him yet that I didn't enjoy doing." One assignment Dr. Carr came to enjoy considerably was that of being Chairman of the school's Public Relations Committee. He said that position pleased him because it gave him a role on campus. "This is the sort of thing I seem to appreciate most," he related, "being able to work with the students, the public concerns, the parents." Dr. Carr directed the lntersession and Summer Sessions, which established new record enrollments for 1979. One of his goals was to increase the summer enrollment. But, he said, "This is awfully hard to do. As our costs go up, it is more difficult for us to attract more students to the campus in the summertime. His involvement in numerous community endeavors aided his efforts in community affairs for the university. He served as an elder for the College church of Christ and was on the boards of the Kiwanis Club, United Way, Visiting Nurses Association, Boy Scouts of America and Delta Hills Health System Agency. He was also chairman of the White County unit of the Heart Association. Attaching great importance to Harding's relationship with the community, Dr. Carr emphasized, "We've always got the challenge - and are continuing to do all we can - to help that relationship between town and gown. A proponent of physical fitness and also an advocate of fuel conservation, Dr. Carr set an example by walking to his appointments and to work.
