Learning by helping 138 For three nights each week one of them clicked open the lock to an empty gymnasium that echoed with silence. Within minutes, however, they felt the floor vibrate with the activity of bouncing basketballs as intramural teams readied for the competition of the evening. Typical of their duties as women's intramural sports program assistants , Lynn Watson and Jessica Moore arrived at the gym 30 minutes before the intramural game to help organize the activity and oversee use of athletic equipment . Women's Intramurals 'We're generally in charge of checking out balls to clubs, keeping the books, keeping score, running the docks and other general duties in the intramural sports activities," Lynn noted. Lynn and Jessica were two of the four physical education majors chosen as athletic assistants by Mrs. Barnes, women's intramural sports director. The women trained for the job one semester I learning how to keep score, run the clock and apply general game rules. As Jessica pointed out, "most of the girls chosen were actively involved in intramurals themselves. " Lynn plans to use what she learned as an assistant in her career in physical education . ' 'I've really learned a lot by being an assistant. I've been able to learn most of the rules of the games and have learned how to keep correct score books and how to use the timing equipment. Someday I hope to be able to be over an intramural program in the same way Mrs. Barnes is, and this will give me the experiences I'll need ." "111 definitely use what I've learned, " Jessica asserted. "l've been able to gain the experience and learn the information that I'll need when I start coaching." Assisting in the intramural program occupied about six hours a week for Lynn and Jessica. Seeing an empty gym floor filled with athletic activity made being an intramural assistant worthwhile for Lynn and Jessica. "It was something related to my field and something that was really interesting. That's why I got involved ," Lynne said. For Jessica , it was her love for sports that attracted her to the program. "I love being around sports. Being there watching the games was the next best thing to actually playing. Assisting in the intramural program gave me the opportunity to be involved in something I love."
