May-Manager. Running: A natural high I n 1964, Randy Jackson sat percr.ed in front of his television set in Springdale, engrossed in the track competition of the Tokyo summer games. Perhaps, he said in retrospect, that wa s where his running career began. Randy runs middle distance races for the Harding Bisons track team - races which include onemile , half·mile and relay raceS. He came in second last year in the District 17 lS00-meter race and went to the NAIA national trat!" meet at Abilene Christian Univer - sity. With Randy , running is n,lturol i He enjoys the feeling of being in shape and considers his natural affinity for the sport a plus in his favor. The 1500-meter is Randy 's favorite track event because "it's fast enough to be exciting, yet slow enough to involve some strategy in it.'" Like the United States mail, Randy has not been detained from running because of the weather. 'The weather is never too bad to keep you from running," Randy believes. ,·It·s never too cold. never too rainy, never too hot ," "Running in the snow is a lot of fun and I enjoy it, but the ice can Track and Field \ be hard on the footing, so the team sometimes practices in the gym," he said. Practice for track team members was a year·round event. "In the fall I run cross-country, which helps my endurance. In the spring, the mileage is shortened and I work on my speed," said Randy. He practices with the team on weekdays but runs on his own during the weekends. So for Randy, what began as a summertime dream has, through unending training, become a natural extension of himself.
