While other cities have their similar thoroughfares, Race Street is in a class by itself. It is not just a street; it is a phenomenon that supports its own sub-culture of life. Race Street has its own gas stations, grocery stores, motels, movies, restaurants and people. In its own special way it lives up to the term "the Strip." Race street - where the action is Almost every city has its main artery that carries and supports the life-blood of the community. Hollywood has Sunset Strip. New York has By day Race Street is the backbone of business in Searcy. More businesses are concentrated along its curbs than any place in town. There are establishments there as varied as Vernon Roger's Insurance and Chuck's Muffler Shop. On Race Street one can find places to repair his car or fix his teeth, places to buy flowers or semitrucks, places to get a yearround tan or a tombstone, places to buy food but no booze. In places along Race one can worship God or buy pornography. Most of what any individual might want is to 288" Freshmen be found on Race Street. Searcy can be seen on Race Street. Race Street is Searcy. Just as morning follows night and night follows day, so in Searcy, when the sun goes down Race Street lights up. Before dusk fully recedes into the night "the strip" begins to resemble a kaleidoscope. From the east to the west along Race, one after the other, multicolored signs light up. There is Pizza Hut red, McDonald gold and Kroger blue. They all beckon to the passerby, to the student, to stop and buy. It is logical to ask, "how do they all survive?" What other town in America with a population of 12.000 has Pizza Inn, Ken's Pizza and Pizza Hut within one mile of each other? For that matter, how does any town of that size support four pizza restaurants along with numerous other eating establishments? Only on Race Street where Harding students, driven by monotonous cafeteria food, spend their money to quench large appetites could such be possible. Everybody knows that where there is a college there are students. Those students get hungry. Where there are hungry college students there is MONEY. To a student, the quickest way to his pocket book is through his stomach. Many places on Race Street capitalize on that. Not everything on the strip costs the student money, however. There is a lot of other "action" one can get into for free. As some Harding students are known to do, one can always play "American Graffiti" and cruise Race Street seeing what he can see. If one likes to mingle with the natives he can stop in Kroger's or Safeway's parking lot and sit on the cars and spend the evening engaged in dialogue. Just for fun (also for free) one could stop at the Berryhill baseball field and catch a Bison baseball game. Of course, anyone can get into what could be described as Searcy's own grand prix. All
