thony Effendi. Anthony is from Jakarta, Indonesia. He and Soei Bong are the only two Indonesians at Harding. At twenty years old, Anthony is the oldest among his three sisters and one brother who are still in Indonesia. His father manages a transportation system in Jakarta, and his mother is a beautician-designer for Indonesian "cover girls." Anthony had heard about Harding from an American missionary in Indonesia and so, Left TAKING time to study, An· thony Effendi makes use of the library's reference room. to get a better education, he boarded a plane and flew to Searcy, Arkansas and Harding to become a junior at the acad~my. Because of government policy that attempts to keep their young people in Indonesia because of their potential good to the nation, Anthony would not have been allowed to return to the United States if he were to go home to visit. Consequently, it has been three years since he has seen his homeland . Anthony relates that out of 6.5 million people in Jakarta, only about 40 are Christians. The rest of the people are Moslems. Ultimately, Anthony hopes to return to Indonesia "to teach my people about Jesus." He says people in Indonesia do not Hsten much to American missionaries, and so he thinks to return there will be an exciting challenge. He also expressed interest in assembling a campaign group in the In talking about Indonesia , Anthony said that the favorite past time of young people is fishing and swimming. One of the main differences he sees between Indonesia and the United States is that Indonesian family ties are much stronger. When asked what he missed most, Anthony said , "I just miss the country and its people."
