It never fails to strike fear into your hea rt - the sudden , shrill shriek of the alarm, the impersonal steel arm blocking your path , and the ' dreaded voice from behind , saying, "Where do you think you're going?" Security at a major airport? The entrance to CIA headquarters? No, it 's the Harding College Library, and you 've just been caught carrying an unchecked book out of the library . Students at the beginning of the year were greeted with a new addition to the library decor - two steel gates guarding the entrance. Thi s is the 3M Spa rta n S ecur it y S yste m, recommended by the library faculty last year and voted on and accepted by the Library Committee. It was installed to stop the loss of books that , until this year, has been a constant pr o blem in t he li brar y . All books and selected peri odicals have in them a strip of charged tape. If the tape is not neutra lized at the desk when the book or magazine is checked out , the secu ri ty system detects it , the alarm goes off and the gate wi ll not open.
