Ravenswood, WV 264 ~ Juniors Contrary to popular belief, Harding's computer in the basement of the Administration Building does not control the school's lighting and heating system. The computer does, however, do many other things for the faculty , staff and students of Harding. Trade-named DEC-PDP11 / 45, the computer has yet to receive an endearing name like "R-two D-two" from the computer operators. It is commonly referred to simply as "the computer." Only three years old, the Digital Equipment Corporation computer is already too small for the increasing load of duties Harding requires of it. During the summer of 1979 it will be replaced by a larger DEC computer, an 11 / 70 model. Duties of the computer are constantly being expanded as new programs can be developed. Presently, the computer is capable of conducting 63 different jobs. The new computer will significantly increase that number. Already the computer is used to cut down the procedure involved in registration , an innovation much appreciated by students who remember the old system. It is used extensively by the registrar's office to calculate grade point averages and to prepare report cards. Next fall , the cashier's office of the Business Office will be put on the computer. The computer's capabilities will be utilized to \ record traffic fines and other charges. Of all the aspects of the computer , "most of the things are behind the scenes," commented student worker Steve Garrett. When asked if the computer ever malfunctions, Garrett replied , "it happens all the time." However , he stated that the computer has averaged better than 90% "up time ;" that is , time when it is not - broken down or turned off for preventive repairs. That is very little interruption of service conSidering that the computer is used for administrative and other tasks 24 hours a day , 7 days a week. Comparing the computer's capabilities to human capabilities lacks practicality. "The computer is only as good
