Left, SHINING in the night, Searcy's Rialto attracts mouie-fouers of all kinds. Right ENTERTAINING students on the front lawn, Daffy Duck cartoons are shown by the ' Student Association. have always fl ocked to the theaters during hard times to forget their troubles ~nd be ca rried away to a land where good always wi ns over evil and the boy always marries the girl right before the cast of characte rs starts rolling . It is not surprising, then, that the most popular films are those which provide an escape from reality: "Star Wars," " Jaws, " "Grease," "Close Encounters ," "Heave n Can Wait. " They all take us on adventures we would probably never be able to experience ourselves. The movies also affect the way we think, fee l, act and dress. After John Travolta boogies his way across the screen, everyone and every- - thing goes "disco" with styles in clothing , hair , music and attitudes reflecting it. Even here at Harding hints of "disco" styles are evident in some students' clothes. Once again , when Travo lta gyra tes across the screen in "Grease" styles go fifties. They are even more evident than "disco" here wi th females in straight-legged jeans turned up once at the bottom, baggy shirts and high-hee ls. After "Star Wars" we bid our fri e nds "may the Force be with you ," and from "Boys from Brazil" we add "cloni ng" to our daily conversations. The popularity of th e " Blues Bro thers" from the movie "Animal House" brings us to repea t "what do you expect for free, a r· r·r· rubber biscuit?" Thi s is a ll part of our reliance on films for advice on how to conduct our lives. There is nothing wrong with fleeing from reality occasiona l· Iy , for reality can be very cruel at times . But we need not miss a chance at love and adventure ourselves because we are too busy watching someone e lse obta in them on a movie screen. - Mike Roden SUZZANE SMITH. Succe.. , AI.
