Therapy Symposium cootdinated by Dr. Donald Neichembaum. Funds supplied for Mental Health Study Focusing on accreditation of the major in social work by the Council of Social Work Education , the Department of Sociology and Social Services completed its self-study report and received its site visitation by a two-member team in October. Modifications in the curriculum were made to strengthen the social work major in keeping with the standards of the Council. The department received a grant of $5,000 from Title I funds to conduct a program in Mental Health Education . During the summer, a workshop was conducted on "Children in Crises," and during the year, workshops on human relations were conducted at several offcampus sites. Dr. Van Tate presented a paper on "Criminal Justice in Africa " at the Arkansas Sociological Association meeting in Little Rock. Bernie Egly, director of the sociai work program, attended the Council on Social Work Association meeting in New Orleans and workshops on hyp~OSis , rational behavior therapy and human sexuality . Serving as a consultant for the Downtown church Childcare Program, Chuck Joiner attended the annual Christian Childcare Conference. Dr. Bill Verkler , chairman of the department, served as president of the Arkansas Sociological Association and was a state delegate to the National Mental Health Association meeting in Washington , D.C. Skills strengthen Speech Department Strengthening the educational preparation of the speech faculty , Charles L. Parker received the M.A . degree in Theatre from Memphis State University in August , 1978, and Dr. Richard Walker studied at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock toward meeting certification requirements in audiology while teaching a full load at Harding . Chairman of the department Dr. Evan Ulrey read a paper on "Barton W. Stone : An American Re ligiOUS Movement" in Minneapoli s at th e November meeting of the Speech Communication Association . At this meeting he represented Arkansas on the State Advisory Council and attended a workshop for trainees for NCATE examiners . He also attended a meeting of the National Council of Pi Kappa Delta in St. Louis that planned the April , 1979, national convention and tournament . Dr . Patrick Garner served as State Cootainator of the Educational Resources Information Center .
